It is about manipulating you, emotionally and intellectually, into not realising you made a mistake and feeling as though we did instead. I think what a lot of people misunderstand about that phrase is that it is in and of itself an example of the tactic: it doesn't actually mean you are right. "The customer is always right" is not something very highly regarded here. That's fine, it just means that we'll probably never have a productive conversation. We are on very different wavelengths I would wager. If that is something you can use, then great, and hopefully even if it makes you feel like you are "wrong", you take the backup speech to heart because that can save you a lot of pain.Īs to the rest, I'm gonna peace out. Well, I've tried to provide some facts of how Scrivener works, and how sync technology integrates with your computer, at any rate. I'm so confused, I was just saying backups are so important to make, since it sounds like you had none! It sounded like you were asking for clarification on what I meant, so I was trying to explain myself a bit better, but now you are coming back at me as though any attempt to do so is "more of the same" and "telling you that you're wrong", corporate culture (in a small company of less than a dozen!) etc.
I'm kind of losing the thread at this point, sorry to say.
Meanwhile why did tech support not tell you to check your own local backups at least? While not as secure as a real backup, having the last five or so copies of your project, saved from when it was closed, should have helped you recover from a sync error. Sorry you lost work, but hopefully you've since taken those steps to keep things you create duplicated onto physical media that is unplugged from your equipment 99.9% of the time, and preferable with at least one copy stored in some other location you trust. We officially support no service, they are all about the same, the only thing we do officially say is trust none of them to protect your work, and always keep it backed up. Given the enormous complexity of the code involved, given the wide latitude of environmental variables between your devices and services running halfway around the world and all of the cables in between-no sync is safe, ever.Īlways keep your work backed up! And that is the only statement L&L makes officially with regards to syncing. The same goes for any kind of synchronisation. If you used floppies as your backup, or the only place you ever stored data. If you used them properly you were fine: to copy data between drives and to keep their contents backed up otherwise. Floppy disks were always going bad, data corrupting on them, etc. It's not even anything special, it's iCloud Drive with a feature skin these days.īut whatever the case, and whatever sync technology you use, it is always imperative to remember that sync technology is itself a high risk transfer medium, similar to a floppy disk in that regard if you recall those. You certainly should not have been told that, and if anything Dropbox these days is less reliable than other options on a Mac. That sounds like something I need to discuss with tech support then.
